Praveen Kumar Pathak is a Professor at the Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi since April 2026. He served as a Professor of Geography at the Center for the Study of Regional Development, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, from 2023 to 2026. He also served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, from 2019 to 2023. He earlier served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi (2014-19); the University of Pune (2013-14); Shivaji University, Kolhapur (2010-2013); and Ravenshaw University, Cuttack (2010).
Prof. Pathak earned a B.A. degree in Geography, English Literature and Education from Ewing Christian College (ECC), University of Allahabad. He completed an M.A. degree in Geography (Gold Medalist) from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He earned M.Phil. and PhD in Population Studies from the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, India. His research interests include the geography of population health, environment, and sustainable regional development. He has published research in several reputable scientific journals, including The Lancet Global Health, Social Science & Medicine, Health & Place, PLOS One, and BMC Public Health. He was a Young Scientist at the World Population Program of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Vienna. He completed several sponsored research projects funded by national and international bodies, including Northeastern University, Boston University, the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi, and the University of Delhi. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Centre for Population and Development Studies, Harvard University, the Institute of Population Research, Ohio State University, and the Vienna Institute of Demography. He is currently the academic editor of PLOS ONE and Frontiers in Human Dynamics (Population, Environment and Development).
